Mutisya Munge

Born around 1892, died around 1936

Mutisya Munge carved ceremonial sticks and served in the British colonial army near Dar-es-Salaam during the First World War. He watched Zaramo carvers there making figures for sale.

He came home to Wamunyu, kept carving, invented his own designs and signed some of them. He taught his family and friends. The craft spread across Ukambani. The cooperative followed in 1963.

A model of his homestead stands west of the carving sheds.
